Spray Tan FAQs

Q1 – What preparation do I need to carry out before my spray tan?
To find out what preparation is required before you come for your spray tan please read our preparation page.

Q2 – What shall I wear for my spray tan?
When you have your spray tan done, you can either opt to wear a bikini or just under pants – preferably not your best!  The guide colour may stain light hair, man-made fibres and wool. Once the treatment has been completed you can then dress immediately and we suggest you change into dark loose fitting clothing, flip flops and bring an umbrella incase it rains!

Q3 – How long does it take to dry?
You will be able to dress immediately after your tan, but I always suggest to dry off for 10 minutes if you have time.

Q4- How soon after my spray tan can I shower?
Ideally leave it for between 4-12 hours, the tan will keep developing for up to 24 hours. If you can, get your spray tan done at the end of the day and then go to bed wearing it. You can then wash it off in the morning.

Q5 – How brown will I get?
St Tropez will work with your individual skin tone to give you a natural looking tan. The DHA will create a chemical reaction on the surface of the skin and it will work with your amino acids to tan you your natural colour.

Q6 – How do I look after my spray tan?
To find out how to look after your spray tan please read our aftercare page.

Q7 – Can I go swimming?
You must not wash, bathe, swim, shower or exercise within the development time. You can swim once your tan has developed but swimming in the sea and chlorinated pools may result in your tan fading more quickly.

Q8 – How long does a spray tan last?
Your tan will last between 3-5 days. It is possible for your tan to last longer if looked after well. To maximise your tan please read our aftercare tips here.

Q9 – Does the product smell?
St Tropez now features Aromaguard™ fragrance technology which eliminates the tell-tale self tan aroma by a minimum of 70%.

Q10 – Will a spray tan protect me from the sun?
No. There are no sun filters in St Tropez products so it’s very important that you still use a sun protection product with sufficient levels of SPF when exposing your skin to the sun.

Q11 – How does spray tanning work?
St. Tropez formulations contain a unique combination of two completely safe active ingredients that work together to give a gorgeously natural looking colour that fades naturally, too. The first, dihydroxyacetone (or DHA for short) is a colourless sugar that interacts with the amino acids in the surface layer of the skin to produce a temporary colour change – your tan. This ingredient is combined with Erythrulose, a naturally moisturising ingredient derived from raspberries, that works in the same way as DHA but it develops more slowly, giving you a smoother colour that lasts longer and fades more evenly.

Q12 – Is St. Tropez toxic in any way?
No, none of the active ingredients in St. Tropez have any known toxicity.

Q13 – Can anyone have a spray tan?
We recommend all customers have a patch test 24 hours prior to having a St Tropez spray tan. Whilst uncommon, it is normal to have an allergy to DHA which is the main ingredient in St Tropez tan.Pop into the salon and we will apply a small amount of the treatment to the crease of your arm or behind your ear. You will need to leave it on between 4-12 hours. Providing you have no reaction we can then carry out a spray tan.

Q14 – Can I have a spray tan if I am pregnant?
Even though St Tropez is safe we prefer not to spray pregnant women.

Q15 – What if I have a skin disorder?
If you suffer from any skin / pigmentary disorders please inform us and we will discuss with you if you are suitable for a spray tan.

Q16 – Is there an age restriction?
If you are Under 16 appointment must be booked by the parent.

Q17 – I am on medication, can I have a spray tan?
If you are on medication please inform us.  When you are on medication the levels of ameno acids on your skin may change so we therefore can not guarantee how the tan will come out on your body. Please ask us for more information.

If you suffer from any respiratory problems, such as asthma you will require a doctors note.

Q18 – Is St Tropez tested on animals?
